Dear Readers,
September was a busy month for JDCC with their Rosh Hashana ser vices and
Building a Sukkah party which was held at my house on September 30th. It was so much fun!
Mistie Collette Shaar, is doing her internship with JDCC for part of her CSUN requirement.
It is great having her with us.
If you have any field work or community service work that
you need to complete, JDCC welcomes your participation and assistance with the
ongoing community outreach projects.
JDCC celebrates its tenth anniversary next
June. A 10th anniversary Banquet Committee will be formed shortly. Please contact
me at JDCCNews@aol.com if you are interested in serving on the committee. We have not yet decided
a June date yet, but it would be helpful to know of any other events in June to avoid
schedule conflicts.
JDCC is now seeking locations to host our Community
Seder, it has not been an easy task finding one for the First Evening. Either they are closed
for the week of Passover, or they are hosting their Community Seders on the First
Evening, or prices are too steep so we will keep you posted in the next issue.
JDCC hopes you will stop by our booth during Deaf Expo 2001 at the Fairplex in Pomona, CA on
November 16th.
Wishing you all a very Happy Chanukah!

First Candle Lighting of Chanukah December 9th
Chanukah, which always falls on the
twenty-fifth of Kislev according to the Jewish Calendar, is usually
held during the month of December. The Hebrew meaning of Chanukah is
Dedication and Shamash is Servant. This year, the first evening of
Chanukah candle lighting is on Sunday, December 9th Chanukah is a
eight-day holiday which celebrates the Jewish people defeating the
Syrian-Greek armies and reclaiming the Temple in Jerusalem. After
cleaning the Temple which was overgrown with vines and weeds, they
finished their work on the twenty-fifth of Kislev. As they gathered
to light the menorah, however, they could only find one small jar of
pure olive oil which would last only one day. To their surprise,
however, the oil burned and burned for eight days and nights until
they could produce more oil. Thus, the eight-day long Chanukah
holiday. |
