Jewish Deaf Congress Meets In August
by Sharon Ann Dror

The Jewish Deaf Congress (JDC) hosts its 23rd biennial convention in Washington, D.C. on August 13-19th at the Park Hyatt Hotel near Georgetown. Representatives of the World Organization of Jewish Deaf (WOJD) is also co-hosting the convention. WOJD was founded in Israel in 1975.

JDC, which was formerly known as "National Congress of Jewish Deaf" (NCJD), will be presenting various awards at a Shabbat dinner held during the convention including the Hall of Fame, Merit of Awards, Anna & Henry Plapinger, Celia & Leonard Warshawsky and the Plapinger Youth Essay Awards.

In 1992 due to federal non-profit regulations, Jewish Deaf Congress was incorporated to eventually take over NCJD activities. The NCJD board was officially terminated in 1996. Current JDC board members are Barbara Boyd, its president, Martin Florsheim who is their vice-president, Steve Brenner as Treasurer and board members at-large Dorothy Brenner, Myron Goldman and Alfred Weinrib.

A membership organization, they publish the 'JDC Quarterly'. Although the JDC Convention is held every two years, they delayed the last convention for one year until this year in order to host it in odd years and void conflicting with major deaf community events.
