B'nai David Judea Congregation has announced
that they are starting interpreted Shabbat morning services every second Saturday of each month starting January 12, 2002 from 9 to
11.30 am including the Rabbi's speech at approximately 10:45am. "We welcome all and look forward to seeing
you there", the temple says, "this is free, people can e-mail Amram, our Executive Director,
at the synagogue at BnaiDavid@aol.com to say they are coming if they want to, however this
is not required". The temple is located at 8906 W. Pico Blvd., Los Angeles, California
Magician Carmel To Appear In Florida
Dr. Simon Carmel is scheduled to appear at
a 'Magical World of ASL' event in Tampa, Florida on Saturday, November 24, 2001. In addition to
Carmel's show, there will be other performances and a special children's program. Carmel won
the Deaf Magician World Champion ship in 1998. Pre-Christmas exhibit, Silent Auction,
Social and various prizes are among the program activities. Southwest Airlines is offering

Bragg Honored By International Deaf Group
Dr. Bernard Bragg, world acclaimed actor has been named the recipient of the
lifetime recognition award by the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) which will be
presented during WFD's 50th anniversary conference in Rome, Italy on September 28-30,
2001. "Bragg is being honored for his pioneering efforts and notable achievements in theater, culture and signed arts which, over a span of 50 years, have
contributed immensely towards upgrading the quality of life for and pride within the global deaf community". Bragg was instrumental in the
founding of the National Theater of the Deaf. WFD is based in Helsinki, Finland with 123
member countries around the world. The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) in the
United States is affiliated with the WFD.
Free Israel Trip For Young Deaf Jewish Adults!
The National Jewish Council for the Disabled's Our Way program in
conjunction with Birthright Israel are offering Deaf and hard of hearing Jewish people 18-26 years old the
opportunity to go on a free ten day trip to Israel January 7-17, 2002 including free
airfare to and from Israel, most meals and all attractions. If you have never been to
Israel on an organized tour before, here is your chance to participate in this fully-interpreted tour of all the famous Holy and most fun sites. You must register online at

Jewish Education Sessions In Massachusetts
Hebrew College in Brookline, Massachusetts is offering a series of workshops sponsored by Combined Jewish
Philanthropies of Greater Boston Working Group on Ser vices to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
for Jewish and non Jewish interpreters and Deaf consumers. The following are planned:
October 18th 'The Jewish Year' by Rabbi Fred Friedman, October 25th `What Is Prayer?' by
Marla Berkowitz, November 1st `Berakhah (Blessing) by Rabbi Cherie Koller-Fox, November
8th `The Sh'ma' by Marla Berkowitz, November 15th `Issues of Interpretation' panel with
Rebekah Barkowitz, Janice Cagan-Teuber, Sandra Slavet and Jody Steiner. Cost
for the course is $125, Deaf participants are invited to attend free of charge. Continuing Education Unit
or ACET credit is available through Northeastern University, approved by Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. This project is also sponsored in part by Northeastern
University Interpreter Education Project, US Department of Education Rehabilitation Services Administration, Interpreter Training Program Grant #H160A000020. For information,

Deaf Role Models To Appear In Missouri
The Springfield News-Leader in Springfield, Missouri
announced on September 24th that Deaf Emmy award winning actress Liz Tannenbaum who had a
cameo role in the Mel Gibson movie 'What Women Want', is scheduled to give a
workshop. This is part of a series of activities scheduled as part of Holland Elementary
School's Deaf Awareness Week in September. `They don't get to see Deaf role models every
day" says organizer Chris Kometer, a teacher at the school, "Our deaf kids are just learning
about their identity. This helps them to understand that deaf people can grow up to be
anything they want." Among activities is acting workshops with professionals from Chicago
Institute of Moving Images on what makes a film accessible for deaf people, a cooperative
problem solving event by Rick Bullard of the Bureau of Deaf Services and a Deaf awareness
picnic at Phelps Grove Park.
Lexington To Honor Oscar P. Cohen
Philip Bravin and Susan Gordon are co-chairing the unveiling ceremony of a
plaque commemorating Lexington School for the Deaf's former site graciously displayed by Hunter College, The City University of
New York on October 18th and everyone is welcome to attend. "Join us for a reception to
thank Oscar Cohen for his 35 years of service to Lexington School/Center
for the Deaf and to the Deaf Community" says the announcement from Lexington Development Office at

San Francisco Mayor Places California's First 7-1-1 Relay Call
Mayor Willie Brown placed a relay call to Deaf actress Marlee Matlin on October 1st, the Sacramento Bee
announced. During the conversation, Brown invited Matlin, who plays Joey Lucas on `The
West Wing' on NBC to come to San Francisco. Starting Monday October 1st, the 7-1-1 system
is available nationally for users of relay service to place relay calls instead of the
conventional 10 digit telephone number. "It's more convenient for business people
traveling to call 7-1-1 and immediately be put through to a speaking operator" says Barbara
Koeth, a spokesperson. "It helps the deaf and hearing community to do business together
... A deaf person can call up and order a pizza and when the pizza guy hears the relay
operator he's no( going to hang up."
