Can you recommend an appropriate Jewish interpreter that is knowledgeable with Orthodox Judaism? My brother is deaf and his wife (my sister-in-law) is hard of hearing. My wife and I have been discussing strategies with them to make this seminar available to them and they suggested we contact you.
    The purpose of the seminar is to learn more about the basics of our religious practices. The seminar is 5 days and 4 nights with lectures most of the day. I am guessing that we will need two interpreters (one male and one female due to the sensitivity of some of the subject matter and modesty of the presenters and listeners). Of course we would undertake not only the fees for the interpreters, but also the seminaries (room and board are included).
    The seminars are given in the Southern California area (typically Ventura, Ontario or Anaheim). They are given every few months, so there is no hurry at present. We are anticipating sending them sometime within the next year. However, my brother and sister-in-law need a chance to meet the prospective interpreters and get to know their style before going ahead.
    Since the seminar material is from an Orthodox perspective, our preference is that the interpreters be practicing Jews, or at least to have prior knowledge of these basic concepts (we can discuss this more in detail). Otherwise, the concern is that if it were all new material, there would be significant difficulty in effectively conveying the correct intent and meaning on the fly.

    I am looking to connect up with any deaf high school students that are interested in going to Israel in the summer of '98. If  I can get a large enough group together, I will attempt to set up a tour as part of an organized trip through any tour group, such as Young Judea, NFTY or USY, that supports these activities for hearing youth.
    These groups currently do not support the needs of deaf Jews. I am hoping that if I can get a number of people interested, they will see the importance of supporting us by providing the appropriate support.
