First Community Seder

The first annual JDCC Community Seder was a pleasant event. Sixty-seven adults, five teens, eleven children and one infant attended the Seder at Beth Jacob Congregation.

A big thanks to the leaders of each table who did a great job leading their Seder!

A beautiful amethyst Haggadah was used. Barbara Boyd, Shelley Cohen and Denise Sidansky were the editors. They did a nice job on it.

A theme was assigned for each table: Afikomen, Russian Haggadah, Four Cups, Ten Plaques, Four Questions, Elijah, Seder Plate, Dayenu, and Had Gadyo.

Edmond Guenoun, the caterer did an excellent job with the dinner. We had matzah ball soup, chicken with mushroom sauce, tzimmes, potato kugel, macaroons, and chocolate cake with white sauce. We had a long wait to get the food due to other Seders going on at the same time and site. Edmond is the exclusive catering at Beth Jacob so he sure had his hands quite full supervising the food for all the Seders.

A personalized, "JDCC's Afikomen Winner 1995" reward was given out to those who stole it!

We asked around for feedback on the program and here is what some suggested: offer a training program for prospective leaders on how to explain traditions when they read the Haggadah; read the third and fourth cup before we eat dinner then grace after meals after we finish eating as it is very late for many people as some were not used to a long and late evening (it ended at 11:30 P.M.); start earlier than 7 P.M. (we can't start before sundown); the Russians need an adapted Russian Haggadah for deaf signers; each person to get their own Seder plate; the teens to so at their own table, and place signs everywhere about JDCC's Community Seder and where to find our room.

There is always room for improvements and again, I want to thank you to all that participated in JDCC's First Community Seder.

Till Next Year in Jerusalem!
