Yom Kippur Services
J.D.C.C. invited Rabbi Fred Friedman of Baltimore, Maryland
to conduct services. A big thanks goes to him. We will miss him in 1995 as he is
celebrating his tenth year of service with Brooklyn Hebrew Society of the Deaf for both
holidays, Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. Because of this, we had a group discussion on
"Future ASL Approach Services. Thanks to Ira Rothenberg for leading and moderating a
great group discussion. It was fun and a challenge. See page 4 and 5 on highlights and
results.
This year, we had thirty-one adults. It was real nice. The Teens
services was a big success with six children. Thanks to Melanie Chaplick and Barbara Boyd
for their hard working and well deserved praise. Also a big thanks goes to Rabbi Gottesman
and Hillel Hebrew Academy for letting us use space at their facilities.Kaparot
Big thanks also goes to Rabbi Avremel Levitansky of S. Monica Chabad
House who gave an enriching experience of an ancient Jewish custom, Kaparot. Thanks to
Phyliss Dror who donated the chickens. Also thanks to Rabbi Levitansky for donating 200
pushkas (Tzedekah boxes) to JDCC so if anyone wants a box, let us know. When the box is
full, you can either return the box or send us a check for the full amount and start using
it again. Thanks to Mark Friedman, Hana Niv and Jay Malmeth for their help putting JDCC's
labels on each box.
Kaparot Experiences
My Jewish Discovery Museum
The September 25th date has been postponed to December 11, 1994 from
12:30 to 2:30. We postponed it for two reasons: Temple Beth Solomon started their first
day of Sunday School on this day, and we wanted to give these kids this opportunity.
Secondly, NCSY/Our Way of L.A. had a bunch so to avoid conflict, the new date is after
Sunday School, and just before their winter break. So you still have a chance to make your
reservations. Deadline is November 15th.
Sukkah Dinner
We had originally planned to have Thai dinner in the
Sukkah, but the owners of Touch of Thai, the Guenouns has closed down so there was no Thai
dinner. Instead, we had an Israeli buffet. We faxed flyers to 20 people and mailed 20 via
first class due to short notice. 32 people came! I do have bright news - The Guenouns will
be opening a new kosher Thai restaurant sometime in October at a new location, and has
promised me we will experience their Kosher Thai cuisine. The new date for International
Kosher Dinner will be on December 10th, Saturday night at 7:00 P.M. Speaking of fax
machines, if you have one, please give us your number so we can add your name to the fax
list! No charge.
Chanukah Brunch
There will be a Chanukah Brunch at Susan Margolin's
Clubhouse on December 4th, Sunday at 11 A.M. This is a family gathering time so come and
bring your family. Help us light the eighth candle of Chanukah. We will play games, and a
delicious traditional Chanukah feast such as potato latkes, blintzes, and jelly donuts!
Admission is $5.00 and a $5.00 Gift Value Exchange. Deadline is November 27th. Please mail
payment to J.D.C.C.1717 Bagley Avenue, L.A., CA90035. At door, $8.00 and $5.00 Gift Value
Exchange.

Teens Observe Yom Kippur and Sukkot
The Los Angeles Teen Havurah had a full and enriching
September. They are off to a good and busy New Year.
Their first activity was a Yom Kippur program designed especially for
teens in conjunction with the Jewish Deaf Community Center. The program was a combination
of worship services jointly with JDCC and discussions among the teens and their
counselors. So exciting and interesting were all the activities that fasting was almost
easy.
On Saturday, September 24, the teens joined JDCC again for an Israeli
buffet in the sukkah. Afterwards they went to Brad Cohen's home for an allnighter,
followed by a wonderful Sunday morning brunch in the sukkah.
Activities for October include a fund raiser at the Sports Arena, and
another all-righter and trip to Knotts Berry Farm.
Counselors for the Teen Havurah are Melanie Chaplick, Lauren Abbott and
Eric Posner - all students at C.S.U.N.
